Hey everyone! It’s been a little bit, hasn’t it? So much has happened since we last wrote to you here in long-form on the GFGC blog, including fundraising events, the formation of our brand new leadership team and so much more. So, before we kick off 2023 with a bang, I’d like to quickly recap all that we achieved in the second half of 2022!
Our biggest highlight of last year was Nintendothon Legends, our charity marathon in July that brought our community together for five days of charity and fun. Nintendothon Legends blew past it’s original $1,000 goal, raising a grand total of $2,930 for the benefit of Direct Relief. Thank you to everyone who came together to make this event our most successful Nintendothon to date!
Beyond Nintendothon Legends, 2022 also featured the formation of our brand new Leadership Team! This incredible group of community members has come together to help build the future of GFGC and you most likely will recognize each and every one of them from Nintendothon Legends this past summer. The team has already worked extensively in the last few months to create new experiences for the GFGC community, including our weekly tabletop RPG streams and the Operation scare-ity: water event back in October, which raised $204 for charity: water. On behalf of the leadership team, I can say that we’re truly excited to share all of the things we’re cooking up for a stellar 2023 real soon!
Speaking of the new year, we should probably address the big elephant in the room. As many of you may have noticed these last few weeks, we unfortunately had to cancel our winter Nintendothon event once again this year. This was not an easy decision to make by any means, as GFGC streams are a holiday tradition for many of us going back nearly a decade, but we were just unable to put the pieces in place this time around. While we are definitely planning Nintendothon events for later this year, we felt that we needed a fitting replacement to make up for the event we missed this holiday season. Which is why we’re excited to announce that one of our past events is finally making its long awaited return!
This month, we’re bringing you GFGC Marathon: Level Up – A 3-day streaming event featuring our amazing community of broadcasters once again! Similar to previous GFGC Marathon events, we’re looking for passionate Twitch streamers in our community interested in gaming for global change. If this sounds like you, please fill out this interest form! We’d like to hear from all broadcasters no later than this Saturday, January 7th, 2023, so please let us know if you’re interested in participating as soon as you can.
For GFGC Marathon: Level Up, we are excited to be supporting a new cause for the first time in several years – The Trevor Project! This incredible charity’s mission is to end suicide among LGBTQ+ teens and young adults. The Trevor Project estimates that more than 1.8 million LGBTQ+ young people seriously consider suicide each year in the United States. This organization is working to change this unfortunate reality, most prominently through their operation of a free 24/7, 365 day a year crisis counseling service for young LGBTQ+ people in need. This service has reached numerous youth in need of help, serving more than 200,000 people in 2021 alone. Beyond their crisis support, The Trevor Project also helps to advocate, research, and educate, in an effort to make our world a more inclusive, accepting and safe space for LGBTQ+ teens and young adults to feel free and proud to be who they are. With all of the incredible work that they engage in, The Trevor Project has helped to both save and change lives, and with your support, they can continue to reach even more LGBTQ+ youth in need of help.
