Announcing The Summer of Water Campaign

GFGC, it’s officially summer time! Now that the majority of our community has finally been pulled from the grasps of school and college, it’s time to begin again in doing what we love to do: making a difference in the world. That’s why we’re bringing together all of GFGC this summer for a community-wide global changing effort. I’m excited to officially announce our next fundraising campaign, The Summer of Water.

The Summer of Water campaign will benefit charity: water, a charity organization working internationally to end the global water crisis. Many of us don’t even treat access to clean water as a luxury, as we get clean water from the tap, showers, and bathtubs. Even the water in our toilets is clean. Around the world, an estimated 663 million people do not have this luxury however, as for them, the closest water source can be up to several miles away and contaminated as well. Walking several hours a day for water takes away time that children could spend in schools, or parents could spend working.

The story doesn’t have to end here though. charity: water has worked extensively to end the global water crisis through the support of donors like you, building wells and biosand filters in developing countries to make access to water easier and safer. Since 2006, charity: water has funded more than 23,000 clean water projects in 24 countries, granting access to clean water to more than 7 million people.

In the past, Gaming for Global Change has supported charity: water through four different fundraisers, supporting projects such as a Piped Water System in Kenya, and two Drilled Wells in Uganda. Although we’ve been able to raise around $6,300 for the benefit of this charity, the global water crisis still continues. That’s why we’re hosting the Summer of Water campaign this year, to continue to work toward giving people access to clean water from all around the world.

This summer, we’ve got a great line-up of streams, events, and more to raise money and awareness for charity: water:

  • Weekly Streams: Several community members will be streaming on evenings during the next few weeks on our Twitch channel for the benefit of charity: water.
  • Community Night: Community Night continues, but now fundraising for charity: water in the process!
  • Wiitendothon: Our upcoming 120 hour charity marathon of 60 Wii, Wii U, and Virtual Console games will be for the benefit of charity: water as we attempt to reach our campaign goal! (More announcements about this event coming in a news post tomorrow!)

These are just the events we’re hosting however! This summer, we’re encouraging all of you to pick up a controller and begin gaming for global change as well! Participating in the Summer of Water campaign is very simple, all you have to do is place the link to the fundraiser page somewhere in your stream and promote the cause. Whether it’s in a panel or through a chat bot, supporting the campaign is easy, fun, and can give you new viewership from other members of the GFGC Community. Speaking of which, be sure to join the brand-new GFGC community on Twitch! It’s a great way to show unity and be a part of our community even further when you stream!

Want to show your support for GFGC’s campaigns and events? Check out our merch shop! Buying Wiitendothon, Summer of Water and GFGC Merch is not only a great way to rep GFGC out in public, but all proceeds from merch sales go toward operating and charity marathon costs. Check out our shop here.

The Summer of Water campaign officially begins today, July 1st, and will run until September 30th, 2017. Let’s work together and raise our $350 goal for the benefit of charity water, and further strive to end the global water crisis.
